Cup shaped, often flattened or irregular, inner surface pale to dark brown, smooth, outer surface whitish, scurfy, to about 10cm across
Late spring to autumn
On fire sites
Spores ellipsoidal, warty (14-18) x (7-9)µm2. Asci (250-280) x (11-12)µm2. Asci tips blued in iodine. Paraphyses equal, septate, slightly swollen at tips.
This species cannot be identified without a microscope. There are several other Peziza species which grow on fire sites, including P. petersii, P. violacea and P. proteana
